How to tell if a used phone is stolen

Free checks and warning signs · Updated October 2026

When a phone is reported lost or stolen, carriers can add its IMEI to a blacklist. A blacklisted phone usually can't connect to US carriers, so it's close to worthless to the buyer. Here's how to avoid buying one.

Free ways to check

  1. Check the IMEI is real with our free IMEI check. A made-up or altered IMEI fails the check digit test.
  2. Search the US stolen-phone database at stolenphonechecker.org. It's run by CTIA, the wireless industry group, and covers phones reported to participating carriers.
  3. Use your carrier's compatibility checker. Enter the IMEI on your carrier's "bring your own phone" page. If it says the phone can't be activated, ask why before buying.

"Clean" today isn't a guarantee. If a phone was bought on a payment plan and the seller stops paying, the carrier can blacklist it later. Buying from someone who can show the receipt or a paid-off account lowers that risk.
