How to tell if a used phone is stolen
When a phone is reported lost or stolen, carriers can add its IMEI to a blacklist. A blacklisted phone usually can't connect to US carriers, so it's close to worthless to the buyer. Here's how to avoid buying one.
Warning signs
- The price is too good. A recent iPhone for half what it sells for elsewhere is the classic red flag.
- The seller is in a hurry, won't let you test the phone, or only wants to meet somewhere odd.
- The phone is still signed in to someone's Apple ID or Google account, or the seller "can't remember the password."
- The IMEI doesn't match. The number from *#06# is different from the box, or our IMEI check shows a different model.
- A "lost" message or phone number appears on the lock screen.
- No box, no receipt, no story about where the phone came from.
Free ways to check
- Check the IMEI is real with our free IMEI check. A made-up or altered IMEI fails the check digit test.
- Search the US stolen-phone database at stolenphonechecker.org. It's run by CTIA, the wireless industry group, and covers phones reported to participating carriers.
- Use your carrier's compatibility checker. Enter the IMEI on your carrier's "bring your own phone" page. If it says the phone can't be activated, ask why before buying.
"Clean" today isn't a guarantee. If a phone was bought on a payment plan and the seller stops paying, the carrier can blacklist it later. Buying from someone who can show the receipt or a paid-off account lowers that risk.
If you already bought a stolen phone
- Contact the seller and ask for a refund. If you paid through a marketplace or card, open a dispute.
- Report it to your local police with the seller's details and the IMEI.
- Don't pay anyone who offers to "unblacklist" or "unlock" it. Those services are often scams, and changing an IMEI is illegal in many places.
